4 Essential Stops on a New Jersey Road Trip

New Jersey might seem like a small state, but there are tons of interesting things to see and do. Whether you love exploring the city or prefer places that are more laid back, New Jersey has something for everyone. As you’re planning your road trip, here are the top four things you need on your list.

Before You Hit the Road in New Jersey

New Jersey covers more than 8,700 miles along the East Coast and connects some of the country’s largest cities. From New York City at its northern tip to Philadelphia along its eastern border, there are plenty of places to visit. Make sure you’ve got your favorite GPS app ready! While there are more places and activities to see and do than are listed here, these are the four stops that you must include on your itinerary.

1. Camden

Located just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, there are several historic places you should see in Camden. The Battleship New Jersey was active during WWII and was the only ship providing gunfire support in Vietnam. The ship tours are interactive, too. You can climb the same ladders the sailors did when the ship was in service, so make sure you’ve got good walking shoes. If you want to cross over to Philly, you can take the Walt Whitman Bridge. The poet’s final home is in Camden, and tours are available.

2. Mount Laurel

Located 15 miles east of Camden, Mount Laurel is a quaint little town that’s a must-see. It’s an easy 30-minute drive from Mount Laurel to the Wharton State Forest, the largest state park in New Jersey. With so many things to see nearby, you might consider booking a hotel in Mount Laurel.

3. Atlantic City

Glittering casinos are perhaps the most recognizable part of Atlantic City, but gambling isn’t the only activity you can do there. You can also treat yourself to a spa visit or check out a show by some of today’s top performers. Make sure to leave time for a walk down the iconic Boardwalk. Built in 1870, it is home to a variety of shops and restaurants.

4. Wildwood

All the way at the southern tip of the state is Wildwood. Get a glimpse at what pop culture used to be like from the ’50s and ’60s in the Doo Wop Experience Museum. Or let someone else take the wheel for a bit and enjoy a ride on the Sightseer Tram Car that runs up and down the Wildwood Boardwalk. Wildwood actually sits on a barrier island and has a variety of beaches to choose from.

Now it’s time to pack your bags and hit the road. New Jersey is beautiful year-round — though it is a popular summer beach destination — so plan enough time to get around the area. Bonus tip: New Jersey is one of the few states that doesn’t require you to pump your own gas. There are attendants who will take care of it for you at any station. Enjoy your trip!
